What is a barn block?
Posted on April 15 2017
Barn quilts are a relatively new concept making their way across the country. Barn quilts are traditional quilt block designs painted by hand on wood and mounted on the side of a barn. The size will depend on the structure itself, but many we've seen are 4 foot squares. Often times, barn quilts are part of a local barn quilt trail. On these organized trails, you can follow a map or guide that will tell you about each individual block and why it was chosen by the owner. There may be a family history behind the design or an heirloom quilt passed down from earlier generations that inspired the barn quilt.
As a quilter myself, I immediately fell in love with this idea. I've always had a thing for small towns and country roads (John Denver, anyone?). Despite not living on a 100 acre ranch, I wanted to somehow mimic the barn quilt at my own home. It was then that we set out to make these outdoor quilts accessible to everyone and our Modern Barn Blocks were born.
We'd love to know...where have you spotted a barn quilt? Are there any barn quilt trails on your bucket list? Where should we travel next?
